Songkran 2026 Bangkok Guide

Everything You Need to Know About Thailand's Biggest Festival

April 7, 20265 min read

What is Songkran?

Songkran is Thailand's most celebrated festival — the traditional Thai New Year. What started as a gentle water-blessing ritual has evolved into the world's biggest water fight. Every April, the streets of Bangkok transform into a massive, joyful water battle.

For tourists, it's an unforgettable experience. For locals, it's a time to visit family, pay respects at temples, and welcome the new year. Either way, you're going to get soaked.

Songkran 2026 Dates

The official Songkran holiday runs April 13–15, 2026 (Sunday to Tuesday). However, celebrations in tourist areas often start a day early and extend through April 16 or later.

  • April 13 — Wan Songkran (main day, parades and water fights begin)
  • April 14 — Wan Nao (family day, temple visits and merit-making)
  • April 15 — Wan Payawan (Thai New Year's Day, celebrations peak)

The biggest street parties happen on April 13 and 15. Plan accordingly — roads close, taxis disappear, and the BTS becomes your best friend.

Top Things to Do During Songkran

Join the Water Fights

Khao San Road and Silom Road are Bangkok's two legendary Songkran battlegrounds. Khao San is the backpacker epicenter — chaotic, loud, and packed. Silom is the mega-party with stages, music, and organized mayhem. Both are absolutely worth experiencing.

Visit a Temple

Songkran is a Buddhist holiday at heart. Visit Wat Pho or Wat Arun in the morning to pour water over Buddha statues and receive blessings from monks. It's a beautiful, peaceful contrast to the street chaos.

Eat Everything

Songkran street food is next level. Look for mango sticky rice (khao niao mamuang), som tam (papaya salad), grilled pork skewers, and pad thai. Street vendors set up everywhere — eat before you get too wet to hold chopsticks.

Experience the Culture

Beyond the water fights, Songkran is about respect and renewal. You'll see locals gently pouring water on elders' hands as a sign of respect. Join in — it's one of the most genuinely warm cultural experiences you can have anywhere.

Songkran Survival Tips

Waterproof Your Phone

Get a waterproof phone pouch — you'll want photos, but one direct hit from a water gun can kill your phone. Pouches cost 50–100 THB from any 7-Eleven.

Dress for Battle

Wear clothes you don't mind getting soaked in. Quick-dry shorts and a t-shirt are perfect. Leave the leather shoes at the hotel — flip-flops or water shoes only.

Protect Your Valuables

Carry a dry bag for your wallet, passport, and room key. Ziplock bags work in a pinch. The water is relentless — nothing stays dry.

Sunscreen is Non-Negotiable

The water feels cooling, but you're still under the Thai sun. Apply waterproof SPF 50+ and reapply every couple of hours. Sunburn sneaks up fast.

Respect the Culture

Don't splash monks, elderly people carrying groceries, or anyone who clearly doesn't want to participate. Songkran is playful, not aggressive. Read the room.

Stay Hydrated

Being wet doesn't mean you're hydrated. Bangkok in April hits 35°C+ easily. Carry water and take breaks in the shade. 7-Eleven is your Songkran survival station.

Unwind After the Water Fights

After hours of water fights under the Thai sun, your body deserves serious recovery. Sunburned skin, aching muscles, and complete exhaustion — sound familiar? That's exactly what a proper Bangkok massage is for.
